So what did you miss during my extended blog break of a few months?

Birthdays, summer with all three kids, Boyscouts, reunions, travels, parks, church activities, camps, tons and tons of painting, friends, work, calligraphy and homeschooling. I am sure there are several items that I missed because it seems as if we didn’t come up for a breath of air in the past few months. However, I am happy to announce that the biggest chore that has been hanging over our heads since we moved into this house has been accomplished. I paid some remodel guys come over and replace all the rotten siding and wood around the house exterior. They caulked and primed everything. Then I got some estimates for exterior painting and gutters. No to painting estimates, yes to gutter estimates. This left me standing there with a paint brush in hand staring up at, what seemed to look like the Eiffel Tower before me. I borrowed the neighbor’s ladder, tested out some colors from Sherwin Williams, and then just went for it. I spent most of the scorching summer hanging off a ladder painting the siding and trim. After swatting all the hornets and mosquitoes and wiping away the buckets of sweat, it was well worth it. The house looks like a million bucks compared to before. The last two items on the agenda are to rebuild the front porch steps, which are rotted, and repair the garage door rot.

Here is the back while in the painting process.

Another shot of the back. The chimney was ridiculus. I had to call in reinforcements to paint the top of that. No way was I going to climb up that high, and I'm not even afriad of heights.

If you look closely, you will see that we painted the porch ceiling a soft blue color. You know, they say that painting a porch ceiling blue wards off evil spirits, but I am pretty sure the evil spirits had aready been here...However, they left our house after it started to fall apart and went to a nearby swim/tennis neighborhood.

I should also mention that we stripped/sanded and stained our front door. Originally, I had thought about replacing the unit with something better, but after some more thought, I decided that I didn't mind the style of the door. I just hated the paint layers all over it. So I convinced Husband to start scraping with me on the weekends. Things got hot and heavy (no seriously, the temps hovered at about 100 degrees) and then we took turns stripping in front of each other. Sorry, I couldn't resist... Anyways, the finished results are stellar, because the wood has an antiquey quality to it due to the paint layers. This picture was taken during mid-strip so you can see all the gunk that had to be removed before refinishing.

Newly painted garage. You can see the rotten spot on the door that we will have to address at some point.

After the house was painted, the gutter guys came and put on all new gutters and downspouts. Now the rain is directed away from the house to prevent any new rot. It is amazing! I can’t tell you how relived I am to be done with this project. Next on the agenda is to put in new porch stairs with pretty banisters and rails. Stay tuned for more remodel projects. We have several going on that will blog about real soon!

Spring Break sample platter April 14, 2010

Sorry I’ve been MIA. I have several invitations and place card jobs lined up and have been finishing up some other wedding projects before the new ones roll in. But Iwanted to show everyone some pics from the last couple of weeks around here. Spring Break weather was beautiful, with the exception of record-breaking pollen- but I am not going to mention it to God, because the temps were perfect.

I spent some time hanging out in the dining room, just enjoying its "almost" completeness.

And while I was enjoying the dining room downstairs, someone else was breaking the law upstairs.

We planted some lettuce and spinach and had #3 water them. Sorta.

This picture makes our yard look so big, but trust me, it is an illusion.

RIght before school let out, we went to their "Art in the PArk" to see some of the stuff they've been working on this year. This is #2's pinch pot.

And #1's mask

As you can see, the week was pretty laid back. Here are the boys with one of our neighbors making lemonade on the front porch.

And of course, we had some goodies on Easter morning before heading to church to celebrate the risen Saviour.

Along with a goodie bucket, the two little ones went shopping with us to buy all their spring/summer clothes. We haven't gotten to #1's wardrobe yet. He is pretty picky now.

#3 definitely knew what was going on this year.

Sorry, she's so darn cute, I can't help myself...

Mom, recognize the dress? This was from when me and little sister were kids.

We decided to go for a mountain hike later in the week.

The weather was gorgeous and the trail is totally shaded.

Someone offered to take our picture. Of course we were all sweaty and gross by this point.

I love taking pictures like this!

A view of the metro area.

Probably shouldn't have looked directly into the sun...

Civil War battle site.

Just a little bit tired when we got to the top. All of them did the hike themselves with little to no complaining.

This could be dangerous...

Like I said, tired.

Since working on the house defines our lifestyle- I had to include a pic of #1 sanding the mantel for me. He did a pretty good job.

And by the end of the week, we had leaves on all the trees and azaleas were starting to peek out.

Well that’s a smaple platter of our Spring Break. We had a lot of fun and relaxation. Originally, we were going to camp for a few days, but quickly decided that plan was NOT relaxing.

On another note, now that we are wrapping up the downstairs projects and only small details remain, we have been discussing where to go next. I thought I would venture upstairs, but in reality, it doesn’t make sense to buy carpet or put in a nice new bathroom when the kids are still quite destructive. We are going to (que some John Williams music)

MOVE ON TO THE EXTERIOR R R R R R  (echo, in case you didn’t know)

I am actually very excited about this. We have decided to hire a professional to come in to replace all the rotten wood and siding on the house. Then we are going to have a houe painting party. We will later get new gutters put on professionally, as well. Right now, I am saving up the cash to have the work done as I have already received a pretty fair quote. We are picking out colors and making plans for the front. Be back soon with some of the options!

Whew! Lots of calligraphy lately. All the spring weddings are keeping me busy. However, I am pinching in some time for our beast of a house.

So let’s rewind back to two weeks ago. It was a Friday (I think) and it snowed. Lots of snow. Well, for us anyway. I bet we got about 4 inches when it was all said and done.

This is what we do when we get bored of snow. One of my clients mailed her envelopes in this box. #3 was sure grateful for the new box.

The day after snow and ice I was itching to get out of the house so that I could go find a missing part for my chandelier. As you can see from the pics below, I got a little distracted by the other stuff in the store.

Wouldn't mind having this one...

Oooo, or this one!!

Wow. Gorgeous. This one would do.

Sigh. Back to reality. Bet you would recognize that ceiling anywhere. Here is our current dining room chandelier. You can see it under the layers of dust, if you look closely.

Big changes are happening in our dining room and living room. Sorry, I am not ready to reveal anything yet. Let’s just say that we are really making an effort to have a cozy welcoming house. Whether we sell or not, we have to live here in the time-being, and I don’t want our trademark look to be stains and sawdust.

Just a hint. Those grandma looking french fireside chairs are going to the upholsterer on Friday. Yes, I am paying a professional for this gig. I can’t wait to show y’all the transformation because it is going to be awesome!!

What else do you call people who climb way up in the trees on a windy frigid holiday? On Christmas Eve, the tree cut service who usually cleans our gutters came by and offered us a deal we couldn’t refuse. They could cut down all the trees blocking light to the front yard garden. They also would trim the two trees in front of our house that are trying to grow into our bedroom. Plus, they would bring us a half cord of chopped and seasoned wood. So they came with all their equipment and got to work on Christmas Eve. They put these straps onto the sides of their boots that had huge spikes in them. Then the guy hacked the spikes into the side of the tree as he clmbed higher and higher. I couldn’t watch. The wind was blowing like crazy and there he was at the tippy top, bending back and forth. I kept reading the side of their truck- licensed and insured. Whew. Relief. I mean, these are the kind of guys that skateboard off the top of roof when they’re nine yrs old, or fashion a makeshift hangglider out of old umbrellas. Yikes.

Husband and #3 watching them lower the limbs down by long ropes.

Cold. Can we have hot chocolate now?

This was the pile of limbs in our driveway before they sent it through the chipper. I was thinking to myself how it wouldn't bother me if they sent the house through the woodchipper too...

Can you see #3? She was hiding behind the woodchip pile.

The woodpile became a ride.

We spread some of the chips as mulch for our garden island and in all the boxes out front. There are still a trillion woodchips left over.

This is not a scene out of the next Tim Burton movie. It's the two trees in front of my house that have been "trimmed." You know, like when you go to the hairsalon and ask to take a little of the sides and they fire up the electric razor? They swore these trees would be good as new in the spring. I am having my doubts.

Walk the Plank November 15, 2009

We will be walking the plank for the next few days as we work on the floors in the foyer. Right now, as I type, I hear the pounding of the hammer building the plank taht will go from the bottom stair into the dining room. Believe me, I know that in reality, there are still going to be footprints on the new finish. Anyway, the simple project has been turned into a Cubscout activity for #1. He likes sawing and measuring. Good thing, too. Because apparently, that is what we are all about.

I also realized that I never posted any pictures of our fall season! It is gorgeous here in the fall. About half of the leaves have already fallen, but it is still a beautiful display of God’s amazing art.

No. Seriously. It has NOT stopped raining since 7AM. This is not a casual little drizzle. This is hard-out pouring buckets all over the place. Right now, half of the roads are closed in our immediate area. Schools are closing early. Fools are trying to drive through creeks that are crossing the roadways and police are forming blockades so that they don’t have to keep pulling cars out of the whitewater currents. One of my neighbors became a refugee at my house with her two girls when she realized the bottom of the hill was too deep to get her minivan through. Everyone is wet-vacuuming out their garages and trees have fallen in a couple of spots. There is lots of thunder and lightning and the radar shows no end in sight. SO thankful we got a new roof put on a couple of years back….

A little light on the subject April 29, 2009

Yay! I actually got the lights up on the porch. What a relief! Not only does the porch look way better, but those two boxes are finally out of my living room. I’m sure some other box will take their place within the month. Clutter happens. In the process of removing the old nasties, I uncovered an ancient mass bug grave. It made me pretty queezy, because everytime I pulled out a wire, three or four moth bodies tumbled out onto my hand- which was holding a screwdriver, some screws and the light fixture. Gross. Very gross. But I wanted to show everyone how a little change can make a big impact.

Garden update April 23, 2009

Well, things are starting to grow. I think the seedlings were a bit confused for awhile. It would be warm and sunny, but the next day there was a bitter cold wind and frost and then a couple days later, torrential rain and tornadoes. But I think they are ready to take off. I’m hoping, anyway… I mentioned a few posts ago about our tree canopy and how we wanted to have a few cut down to allow more sunlight through. Here are some of those trees marked off in our side yard.

That's our neighbor's house in the background. They built a porch onto their house last year. I really like it much more than ours because it is deep enough for a swing and other furniture.

I also wanted to show you our mailbox broccoli that I planted in the fall. It pretty much did nothing for a long time until the weather started to warm a little. Here they are now. Lots of leaf- no food.

Look how the grass greened up.

Some updates on the rest of the garden:

One of our raised beds. Those are snap peas that are going crazy in there. Some of it is cabbage, but the rabbits feast on that in the wee hours of morning.

Ahh. The front of our house looks pretty when everything is green. We're about to add two more raised beds to the front yard- one for beans and the other for melons.

Ask our dog. He might know.

So for the past couple of days, our little dachshund has been running on the house with wet paws and snout. I wasn’t too suspicious since we have had some rain here. But he had an odd smell. Kinda woody and rotten. Right, so, I didn’t exactly want to snuggle up for some affection. I walked around the yard this morning and caught him in the act. Apparently, he missed his calling in life, and may find joy in moving to a beaver colony.

Still going- a few minutes later. Pretty slobbery by now.

Here he is - ten minutes later. Man, a tongue splinter would hurt like Hades, wouldn't it?

While I was back there in the yard, I noticed that the grass Husband transplanted is actually growing. This is the ONLY patch of grass growing in our back yard. The rest is a pinestraw Dustbowl.

I'm reluctant to mow it. Just like when your hair is finally growing out. It's not like you want to trim it when it is finally growing!

Oh, I bought these on sale a month ago for our front porch. I love them. I have not had a chance to put them up with all the comings and goings lately. I think this is the weekend for the installation of these babies!

The new pretty ones...

In case anyone was wondering the status of my Chambers oven project…..weeeelll. It’s going. Slooooooowly. I am scraping rust spots and sanding down the metal so that it can be repainted. I think this is the hardest and most tedious part. The chrome top will have to be sent to an auto shop to be professionally finished and the some of the reporcelain work will also be sent out. I will get there. You know I couldn’t just buy a new stove from Home Depot like the rest of the population. Hmm. I seem to feel that way quite often.

Yes, I am totally aware that this is a giant beast that consumes a fourth of my kitchen's square footage...

at-home-002Wow! We have waited all winter for snow, as you know, we usually get two light dustings a year. There was one “big” snow the first year we lived in GA and it was a white-out with very little visibility. I was driving when it happened and everyone had to pull over on the side of the road for about fifteen minutes. The snow we are getting right now was predicted, so we were ready. I covered up my seedlings with a tarp and bundled the kids in warm clothes. We slept in, ate a big brunch of sausage, cheesy eggs and biscuits, and then ran out to play. Unfortunately, it is the wet snow with rain and ice mixed in, the kind that falls as snow and immediately turns your hair soaking wet. But beggars can’t be choosers and the kids have been asking me since October when it was going to snow. You know, because moms know everything, right?
